This ability to serve a diverse array of end markets make diversified industrial businesses less susceptible to cycles of a particular industry.
The commonality among all businesses we find attractive in our diversified industrials focus is a well-defined and defensible competitive advantage. They differentiate themselves in the marketplace through deep technical expertise allowing them to manufacture high value add, mission critical components resulting in outstanding gross margins. These engineering-centric companies solve their customers’ most difficult, technically challenging problems. Generally, the parts they manufacture or distribute represent a small cost of the overall system or product but have an extremely high cost of failure. This capability positions these businesses as value-added partners to their customers’ engineering, design, and/or purchasing departments. As a result, their customers tend to purchase based on value and quality rather than cost.
